Re: "Something worth saying"

Being relatively new at Chapman, I have never heard of these so-called "taboos" on campus you mentioned about. However, I feel that you criticism of "rich" kids is uncalled for. And adding the disclaimers the way you did doesn't make me agree with your argument more. You wrote that, "we all know that this campus is bursting with rich kids" like it’s a bad thing and asked the reader to take a look at the expensive cars and to go to the cafeteria to see students complain about the food. To say that, "most of the students on this campus are spoiled," because they drive expensive cars or comment about the cafeteria food is just plain ignorant. Since when did driving an expensive car define the person driving it? If someone you knew drove a Mercedes to school, would you say he or she is spoiled just because of the car he or she was driving? I judge whether a person is spoiled or not based on who they are as a person, not on what car they drive. I don't know about you, but I don't let material things like cars define who I am as person. I feel whether I drive an Audi or a Toyota to school shouldn't matter. Maybe if you were more open to the people around you, you would realize how ignorant it is to judge people based on what car they drive. There may be a people who you see drive off in a Mercedes Benz or a BMV who are helping run an orphanage for homeless children or collect food for the homeless on their own time without expecting anything in return. You won't get to know these people if you don't have an open mind and continue to judge them as "rich" and "spoiled" solely because of the car they drive.

I eat at the cafeteria regularly and I do see student complaints about the offerings. They are in the form of comment cards that the cafeteria has made available for students to write compliments or feedback on how to improve cafeteria offerings. There are different comments both good and bad. Chapman specifically gave a forum for students to complain so that any improvements could be made to better serve the students. I don't see their complaining about "sub-par" food much different than yours about Chapman. I mean, after all, Chapman gave you a forum to complain about, well, Chapman.

You also said that you, "will not shut up just because what I am saying is not complimentary," and that you, "will not be another piece of the machine, forever nodding my affirmation like an insane, battery-operated bobble-head." What is this machine you speak of? So if I were to be complimentary of Chapman, I would be this bobble-head who forever nods affirmation of Chapman without thinking? If so, to imply that the majority of students are pieces of a machine that just go along with everything that goes on at Chapman without thinking is absolutely ridiculous. To try to put down the intelligence and thinking of people who are complimentary of Chapman is appalling.
