OPINIONS
By G. WOODS, ORANGE RESIDENT
I am a local resident and have been for almost 30 years. While last week’s editorial made a few valid points, the reasoning is lacking. To say that the University is trying to “appease” the city and is over-reaching is one of the most asinine things I have heard. Some of the comments about perverts infiltrating the Undie Run and after-party are just as silly. Although there might be some outsiders who participate and cause problems, the majority of problems – such as drunkenness in public and sexual assault – are perpetrated by Chapman students.
Students: This is not your community, this is ours. You are a guest of President Doti’s and Chapman University. We did not invite you. Thank God the police and campus officials have cracked down on off-campus parties. In your hometown, you would not disturb the peace, fight, drive drunk, urinate, pass out and barf in neighborhood yards, driveways and porches. You wouldn’t empty your trash and ashtrays into the street before you head home to your gated communities. You wouldn’t run around in your underwear.
This is on top of all the traffic, congestion and noise pollution Chapman and its students cause. It seems you all feel entitled to do whatever you want without consideration of others. As humans, some of you are no better than the average homeless person and some of your perspectives on these issues are very immature.
Although there are many great kids at Chapman, the problem is the few who never had to be responsible for their actions (mommy bails them out). They have no respect for themselves, the University or the community and they give Chapman a bad name.
We as a community have lives and families. We do not run amok in your neighborhood, so why would you expect us to accept you doing this in ours? Some students have the impression that Orange would not survive without Chapman. Wrong! This town was not built on one Starbucks coffee at a time. This is a historical area with a rich history. We get along just fine during the holidays and vacations when our community is quiet and clean.
