True to its name, this YouTube web series is a bunch of videos featuring an extremely annoying orange. Super Mario Brothers, Autotune, and the horror film “The Ring” are all lampooned by this series.
Painfully unfunny for anyone over the ripe old age of 12, the series star is an orange with human eyes and mouth that makes puns followed by its own laughter. The series makes fun of topics that have been made fun of long ago, and in much better and cleverer ways. “Wassup,” alluding to the series of Budweiser commercials which took over television stations from 1999 to 2002, does not need to be touched on anymore by anyone, yet Annoying Orange sees outdated pop culture phenomena such as this as prime for lampooning.
Annoying Orange tries to draw from the same comedy well as Adult Swim but instead gets flat jokes that grandpas tell, unsuccessfully. However, when the same corny grandpa material is put in the context of a strangely animated orange on YouTube, the result is an extremely successful Web series, which receives more than three million hits per video.
